You know, we do not realize when I saw a poster advertising a particular product and will affect our self-esteem. It becomes very pronounced for women who look at a few other women in several models of media and advertising certain products.
According to research from the Journal of Consumer Research quoted by Science Daily (20/10/09), self-esteem of women who are overweight will decline when they see pictures of other female models. On the contrary, self-esteem have increased lean women, regardless of the size of the model being viewed.
The study, by Dirk Smeesters (Erasmus University, The Netherlands), Thomas Mussweiler (University of Cologne, Germany), and Naomi Mandel (Arizona State University).
This study found no change in self-esteem when a woman sees another woman models in magazines, newspapers, television and others. It shows how the media affects self-esteem of women who are overweight and underweight.
Self-esteem will tend to increase lean women, regardless of body shape models they see. On the other hand, self-esteem of women who are overweight tend to decline, regardless of body shape models they see. More surprisingly, women with overweight and underweight have a comparable level of self-esteem when they are looking at other women models in magazines or other media.
Advertising also affects the behavior of women when eating and exercise. For example, women who are overweight will tend to eat less and have higher intentions to diet and exercise when looking at magazine models and a more slender ideal.
Looking at this phenomenon, it is better to overweight women to avoid seeing the ad with a slim and ideal models as well as women's magazines in general.
