happy with body shape, Depression Avoided
United States, Psychologyx - Many teens, especially girls, think of your body shape and weight are important aspects for themselves. When your weight goes up or even too thin, these girls often experience stress.
This is further exacerbated by the fact a new study in the United States, says teenage girls who tend to feel satisfied on weight and body shape have a level of self-esteem is higher.
The research was conducted by Kerri Boutelle, a professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine.
He said the study took 103 teenage girls who are overweight from survey data between the years 2004-2006.
The teenager was assessed from a variety of factors such as self-satisfaction on his body, self-esteem, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and weight control behaviors.
"We found that teenage girls who are very satisfied on the body tend not to control behavior such as poor weight gain, fasting, eating less food or vomit," said Boutelle, Monday (30/4).
Boutelle explains the positive relationship shown in this study may help interventions teenage girls with depression and anxiety due to being overweight. Enhance self-esteem on body weight and shape is one of the key.
The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health also showed that adolescent girls tend to be satisfied with the shape of the body, not easily affected by depression or other unhealthy behaviors.
"The focus of this study lies in improved self-image (self-image) as well as providing motivation and ability in an effective weight control, which can be formed to protect teenage girls from depression, anxiety or anger which is often associated with being overweight," said Boutelle .
